The common earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, can grow up to a foot in length, though it is usually a little smaller, and it normally has a flattened posterior end, just as you described. Around here they are called "night crawlers", at least by fishermen.

It sounds like a slow worm to me. They are can be that sort of size, and indeed look very much like worms, but aren't. Take a look at this picture
