I unfortunately fell asleep during Shakespeare class in high school, but think about it. Look, love most certainly can be tragic if the object of your affections(man or woman) does not love you back the way you love them. What pain! Or, on the otherhand, if you have to do something (like kill) that compromises your principles of morality or what you stand for in order to win over the love of a woman or a man, then this as well is very tragic.

The idea of tragic love is as love itself. One of the best examples of this is Romeo and Juliet. The love between them was beyond epic, in the manner of Paris and Helen of Troy, Tristan and Isolde, and many others. The idea shared in all of these is that no matter how strong the love, the possiblity of it ending badly due to the interferance of those that had no right to interfere. In Romeo and Juliet the everything that they went throguh to be together was all for naught as it culminated with their deaths. A true tragedy. Love can't always end in happily hever after and in truth it is more common to have love end badly like Romeo and Juliet or Paris and Helen, than to have the happliy ever after like in Cinderella or Snow white. So the real question isn't how can love be tragic, but how can it not be.

In Romeo and Juliet, it was two starcrossed Lovers that could've been together. The Capulets and the Montagues had a bitter feud and one individual falling in love with another from the other family would've been frowned upon.
The reason why Love can be tragic is because we're sometimes unable to choose whom we fall in love with, which was the case with Romeo and Juliet. There were other people whom they could've fallen in love with that wouldn't have involved a blood feud, but thins didn't turn out that way.
The tragedy is losing someone you love or not being able to be with the person you love because people, timing, distance, or all of the above keep you from being together with the person you care about.
