I feel the beginnings of a cold or upper respiratory infection coming on: sniffles, sore throat and productive cough. I have some zinc losenges and some echinacea tea lined up. Will these truly have any effect, and what else can I do to tell this cold that I'm not having it?

its expensive...I go with nyquil day and night for about three days and a little afrin menthol for no more than three days and that usually does it.

The zinc helps - I have killed colds that way.

Airborne vitamin/herbal supplement or the Walgreen's version Walborne are extremely effective if you take within 6 hours or less of the onset of symptoms. - Strongest Recommendation

A friend of mine swears that frequent doses (unknown size) of ester-C work very well for her warding off colds.

I have taken echinacea but have not noticed any effect on colds.

Good Luck!

;-)

" Ignore a cold and it will go away in a week, Treat a cold and it goes away in just seven days".
Like the old saying goes, you feel fine as you become infected and you feel ill when your body fights to get well.
" Bundle up, or you'll catch a cold ", contrary to what our mothers told us, chilliness and dampness have nothing to do with catching a cold.
( To make you feel better ) they say that once a cold has run it's course, you remain immune to that particular virus and it's close relatives for 3-5 years. Of course, this is little consolation when your nose feels like a stuffed turkey and your throat feels like it's lined with steel wool, huh?
A cold virus spreads in one of two ways, the virus is floating in the air from an infected person in the room or by direct touch, from infected noses to hands to uninfected noses. The key then to cold prevention is to put some distance between you and cold viruses. Along with washing your hands frequently to opening windows to keep the air moving, avoid rubbing your eyes and disinfecting hard surfaces in your home with a good disinfectant will greatly reduce cold viruses.
Some people claim that Vitamin C does not work, but it does if you take the right amount. It's recommended to take at least 2,000 milligrams a day from your first throat tickle until the cold is completely cleared up. Sometimes 5,000 milligrams a day may be needed. To combat diarrhea ( which is sometimes a side effect ) try using the calcium ascorbate powder, take 1 tsp mixed with juice, 4 times a day.
You mentioned Zinc, which is very highly recommended, but don't swallow them whole, suck on them until they are dissolved, and instead of the Lozengers use the 23-milligram Zinc Gluconate Lozenger every 2 hours. Also don't use the lozenges any longer than one week, as overtime, zinc can suppress your immune system.
Echinacea is very good and also ginger contains a lot of anti-viral compounds. Ginger also tastes good, to make tea, add 1 heaping tsp of grated fresh gingerroot to 1 cup boiled water, allow to steep for 10 minutes. Drink about 3-4 cups a day until your cold gets better. Also drinking hot teas or any hot beverage, you'll warm up your throat which impairs viral replication.
In the food category, eating Shiitake mushrooms contain compounds that bolster your immune system to better able you to fight off a cold and so does eating red peppers and the old stand-by chicken soup. Ayurvedic Medicine also tells you to eat more whole grains and steamed vegetables, eat less meats, dairy foods, oily foods, nuts, pastries, and sweet fruit juices until your cold symptoms subside.
To sum up:
1) Take about 1,000 milligrams vitamin c every two waking hours
2) Suck on zinc gluconate-glycine or zinc acetate lozenge every two hours or take as often as you can tolerate.
3) Take the herbs echinacea, goldenseal, and astragalus - either 1 to 11/2 tsp. of tincture three times a day or 250 to 500 milligrams of powdered herb three times a day.
4) Practise sanitary ways.

Hope you feel better!

colloidal silver! The supplements are inexpensive, easy to take and have no negative side effects, they also include vitamin c and calcium too but the silver will eliminate whatever virus or germ is bothering you! For now a licorice and oregano tea (with plenty of hunny) will make your throat feel great and stop the cough. Drink it slow and hot. The natural cures you have lined up will help, just don't over do them.

maybe I could over-night the silver to you. Email me for info on even more effective cures (and to keep from getting sick again)

I dunno...wish I could help you. As it is, I put up a great fight for the past two weeks...trying to fend of that crap...it kept coming on and I kept chasing it away...sucking vitamin c drops all last week, trying to rest, etc. But then...yesterday, it finally got the upper hand. Now, I'm miserable as hell, sitting here with my body wanting to go to sleep, a breath right strip over my nose (which is sore btw) and just out and out miserable. Good luck to you!

hey, I was a preschool teacher for 5 years and had tons of kids with colds and hands down the best thing you can do is drink a lot of orange juice and sleep as much as possible the combination of vitamin C and rest just helps your immune system like you wouldn't believe.

Catch it quick and then let it go. If it's gonna come, it's gonna come, sooner or later ..ah .just jesting!.
Seriously, take warm ginger tea at night and have enough of sleep. Your own body will build sufficient resistance to twart an impending attack.
