Yes, that is right. No reading the directions, just taking out the new toy and playing with it, for hours. Yes, the green grunge is gone. However, now the banisters and the flooring have very much of a splintery feel.

Please help me remedy this situation, short of building a new deck. I haven't stained it yet, cause i know there is more work to be done. Right?!

It is totally normal for the deck to feel rough after a power wash. Afetr all you "power blasting" humidity into the grains of the wood and causing them to raise. In my bids I always allow for sanding afterwards even if it light. Buy or rent a decent belt sander and run it over the area lightly and quickly you will notice a remarkable difference. I use a 100-150 grit. Then it is ready for stain or paint. Then your son son will be ready for earning money with his new toys. I get easily $1.50 a sq. ft. for house and deck cleaning. Good Luck

First of all -- you can try sanding it smooth (an arduous Process especially since he did NOT read the instructions and figure out how to TONE DOWN the pressure to NOT ruin the deck wood), or try sand-blasting it -- both may not be enough ...

The real key here is to READ the instructions BEFORE any new toy is handed to any male -- because (my own experience) is that neither my ex NOR my son was willing to READ the directions or even go to ask the questions or LISTEN to me tell them WHY I set the nozzle a certain setting or the power a certain way), so that is how you got the rough surface on your deck.

YES, you WILL have to fix this problem before prepping and staining -- and the worst pieces MAY HAVE to be Pulled Up and REPLACED.

Sorry, no easy way around this problem.

you can simply make him go out there with a power sander, and sand it down. I dont have the slightest idea why you would sand blast it...that would leave sand all over the place, and it would wear the wood more, especially if you sandblasted unevenly. Then...if you decide it needs to be stained/seal, do that...if not...then it should be fine with the next rain and the rain will wash off the dust...

P.S. I refurnish furniture and use the pressure washer all the time, but be careful not to get to close...or else it does splinter...also...sand with the grain...

It sounds as though everyone so far has it spot on. A few hours with a power sander should do the trick. Try to make sure the wood is nice and dry before you start to avoid shredding it though. And confiscate the power washer.

Best solution is to rent a power sander that is used to sand hardwood floors before refinishing, the railings you will have to use a hand sander on, sand to a smooth finish then refinish.

Sand blast it or power sand it and then stain or treat it... Sorry... It's going to stink. Better do it before fall if you live in a cold climate!

Get a power sander and get rid of the rough spots. Then, proceed as usual.

Sand it, then stain is and put some thompsons water sealer or other sealer on it. It should come back like new.
