Just curious on how often this should be changed. One of my friends changes it every other oil change while some people are like "what's a PCV valve?"

Take it out and shake it. If its not all gummed up and it rattles put it back in. Unless, its in a 5.0l ford, In that case remove the screen from beneath it and clean that out real good. The only purpose for the pcv valve is to relieve crankcase pressure due to blowby gasses. If you don't release this pressure it'll blow out your oil seals. In the old days they just vented it to atmosphere, but now we have pollution controls so you have to burn it in the cylinder. Extend the life of your oil my asss.
That guy is on crack. Synthetic Crack.

I have never changed a pcv valve ,and have never failed a California smog test because of it;just clean it occasionally. A pcv valve is actually a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. It allows gases from the crankcase to enter the combustion chamber and be burned and expelled through the exhaust system.

depends on milage. your owners manual should say something about changing it. a positive crankcase ventilation PCV extends the life of your engine and oil but check your manual and dont change it every oil change that gets expensive.also switch to a synthetic oil a 10w-30 oil change every 5k castrol makes a great oil for all engines but if yours has over 100k i advise using a synthetic.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Change that every 6 months or a year, depending where you drive your car. Dusty, dirt roads, change quite often, highways, can last up to a year.
