I did my own research. The following are some quotes from the Pope discussing the historical facts of Islam.

...and the Pope quotes the emperor who wrote "Show me just what Mohammad brought that was new, and there you find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

"Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul," said the Pope, extrapolating on what the emperor from so long ago had observed. An emperor who said, "God is not pleased by blood and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body."

"Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats," said Emperor Paleologus. "To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death..."

History demonstrates that Islam was spread rather swiftly after the death of Muhammad in 632AD and that was accomplished as much by the sword as by any other means. Those who refused to accept Muhammad as the new prophet of the new god he proclaimed frequently found their heads separated from their body. Even today, Islam's prescribed punishment for apostasy or adopting another faith is death.

It was this resort to historic violence the Pope was addressing and the Islamic response was violence.

First of all he didn't praise anyone for saying the teachings of mohammed are evil. He simply read a passage from a 14th century scholar who said the teachings were evil. Muslims, and yes I will say muslims, I don't care what you guys say in retort, are always looking for a reason to kill innocent people in the name of allah. They are calling for an assassination of the pope now, then i say all extremist muslims need to be exterminated like the rats they are.

He read a quote from centuries ago about the teachings of Mohammed being evil and wrong.

So, it wasn't his own words, it was the truth, and he's stuck apologizing for it. Pretty messed up.

I don't see the Muslims apologizing for, oh, say flying into the WTC 5 years ago or saying all Christians (including the Pope) must die, but then it goes to show you whose teachings are really benevolent and whose aren't.

He said Islam is a religion of evil. And Muslims are proving his comments true with their violent protest. They take everything personal and don't have any clue how to turn the other cheek. They must be bored, because they are always shown in the streets protesting.

He quoted and praised a guy who was VERY anti-muslim...you know a guy really into Muslim persecution...I'm not sure of his name. But that's why Muslims are angry! Imagine if someone quoted Hitler and was talking about what a great man he was at a Bah Mitzvah!

It is as the others have said, he read a quote from centuries ago and they all pounced on him as if they were his words.
