Affordable is the problem. The good ones will cost more. Medela is an awesome brand, but probably the most expensive. I used a cheaper brand with my first and had all kinds of problems. I sucked up the cost with my second child and never regretted it. I nursed him for a year and a half. My advice: save up and get a nice one, especially if you plan to breast feed for a long time or have more children. You get what you pay for.

When I had my first child, I spent an absolute fortune on breast pumps before I found one that really worked for me. It was the wonderful Medela. They are a bit pricey, but it is so worth it. From what I understand, the Medela and Ameda are pretty comparable, but with my second child, I was not willing to risk it. We went Medela all the way. If you cannot afford a new one, look on eBay for the pump and you can buy the membranes and bottles, etc. (any parts that will touch the milk) new from the Medela website or even on eBay. Good luck and congratulations on your impending(?) motherhood and the decision to breasfeed.

Avent is definetly the way to go . Their products are affordable and you can find them about anywhere. Walmart carries them and may be better priced. They have a website :
www.aventamerica.com/products
you can compare items to figure out what you need. I breast feed both of my girls and was very pleased with Avent.
If you find you are in need of something more "heavy duty", many local health departments will rent out pumps for a low monthly price. This is a good way to go if you dont plan on breast feeding the entire year or more than one child . Those programs usually have nurses available to give advice , which can be handy:)

I would highly recommend the Medela brand. I have a "Single Deluxe" Medela breast pump. It's only around $60.00 - $70.00 (relatively affordable... especially in comparison to the majority of electrics out there!) In order to determine which pump would best suit your needs really depends upon how often you plan to express milk. I use mine to express a few bottles worth (about 4-6 oz. each time) several times a week. I have been very pleased thus far. It is a little noisy... but not bad and it works well.

I'll attach a few links to some websites you might find helpful. You can find customer reviews on several of them... which might help you to make a more informed decision.

Best wishes! And kudos to you for opting to breastfeed! :o)

I bought a new Medela Pump in Style from a seller on Ebay for less than $200 including shipping. You can also rent double electric breast pumps from most hospitals for about $30/month.

Well electric is more expensive. I would go with the Avent Isis. They have an electric and a manual. I have the manual and I get more from it than I did with the electric I tried and any other manul pump. You can get the manual one at target for $50 I think the electric is around double that but I belive its a double pump. You can go to the Avent web page and find out. Good luck and congrats on breastfeeding

I agree with other people who have answered, Medela is the best and the most expensive. Some hospitals rent breast pumps. Do you know anyone who pumped? See if you can borrow their pump to try out different ones...Just wash everything really well first...Good luck..

Maybe the Nursing Mother's Association or other equivalent associations may be able to assist you with the financial aspect of purchasing a breast pump.

Are you sure you want to use an electric pump? I used an electric for weeks and found it pain full and torturous then i switched to an avent manual. and thought it was brilliant because you can go at your own pace and you can control the pressure yourself, try it and if it does work out for you itl be a lot cheaper for you.

Renting a hospital-grade pump is best. I rent and use a Medella pump. It works great! Congratulations on working hard to keep your baby on breast-milk! Good job!
