Did you know that "Odysseus" meand "pain?" He was meant to have a life of pain from his very birth. That's a pretty bleak outlook on life, but you could take it that direction.
It takes the reader on a journey through a large portion of Odysseus' life. You might want to compare it with the Iliad. The two of them show the two different Greek values: The Iliad shows kleos, and The Odyssey shows nostos. Kleos was the ancient greek concept of valor, glory, victory, wealth, etc. Nostos is that of domestic peace. Odysseus has had the first and yearns for the second, so he can complete his life and live out his years with his wife and possessions. One can say it is a journey through life because many people have to leave home before they realize the value of what they have.
Is this a high school prompt? It sounds like it. I am so sorry. I hated BS prompts like this where you're basically forced to agree with some out-there opinion on the deeper meaning of a piece of classical literature. I took a college class that dealt with the Odyssey and greek culture intensively, and I never heard that claim.

The word "odyssey" is now synonymous with journey.
Odysseus spent ten years trying to get back to the people he loved, and along the way he face many challenges - which can be a metaphor for the many challenges one can expect to face through life, as you too aim to reach a goal.
And Odysseus had to use many different resources to achieve his goal. He had to use his intelligence, his strength, his creativity, his friends and his sense of loyalty to make it back home.
He outwits the Cyclops, he holds onto Proteus, he has his friends help him avoid the Sirens, he disguises himself to fool Penelope's suitors, he chooses to leave Calypso...and more.
