Okay, I know that the acualy Christmas Day is 12/15. But it starts before that day. And it seems to start earlier every year! Last year, we'd barely recovered from Xmas '04 when we began planning X-mas '05. So when does the holdiday season start for you? When do you pull out your decorations and music?
I'd prefer that only people who celebrate Christmas answer, but I'm always open to learning about other winter holidays.

LOL, I see what I did: I typed 12/15 instead of 12/25. Sorry.

When I worked in Kohls Department store...
October 1 Halloween stuff went on CLEARANCE and the Christmas trees were up by the 2nd weekend in October.
In my real life - I start putting stuff out in mid-november. I try to get the lights up before it gets too cold, I don't turn them on until Thanksgiving though. I tend to leave my stuff up late too. Last year I think it was mid January by the time I got everything put away.

The Christmas season starts the day after Thanksgiving for most people. That's when the first official day of Christmas shopping begins. But some may choose to wait until Dec 1 to start shopping, decorating, etc.
I'm not familiar with other winter holidays but I do know that Yule/Winter Solstice begins on Dec 21 and is celebrated for several days following.

Personally, I start with decorating ideas for Christmas in the spring when garage sales start. I'm always on the lookout for a new theme or decorations, and you can find some really neat vintage stuff there. I do my Christmas shopping all year long, because it's much less painful on the budget to spread it out. I also listen to Christmas music all year long, only because some of the songs are too good to listen to for just one month of the year. Usually I'll start looking for craft projects to do as gifts or as family activities around the middle of July. Around the start of the school I'll begin looking through my recipes to see what cookies I'll want to make again this year, as well as start looking for new additions to my collection. Around this time I'll also start stocking up on nonperishable food items that I know I'll be using throughout the Thanksgiving-to-New Year's holiday season. The first batch of Christmas cookies will be safely stored in the freezer by the middle of October. We don't put up any outdoor decorations until after Halloween, mostly because my husband says snowmen don't mix well with his skeletons! The outside lights are turned on for the first time the night of Thanksgiving. I'll put the trees up as soon as I can convince my husband, which is usually Thanksgiving weekend, sometimes earlier. I try to start filling out envelopes and cards at the beginning of November to be mailed out on December 1. Presents get wrapped any time I get a few minutes without my daughter peeking! On December 1 the Advent calendar gets put up and voila! Full Tilt Christmas. After Christmas I hit all the sales to get additions to my decorations. After New Year's when everything settles down I'll update my Christmas card list and also make notes about recipes I've made, decorating ideas that worked/didn't work, etc.
I know this seems like a whole lot, but it really is my hobby. Some people collect stamps. Some people go fishing. I have Christmas!

The official Christmas Holiday season starts the day after Thanksgiving. That used to be the day that Christmas gifts and decorations come out in the stores. Now they put that stuff out before Halloween. How revolting! I'm so poor, I have to shop for Christmas year around but why can't they wait for Christmas season to put Christmas displays in the stores?

Are you talking about commercial "christmas" or the Christian celebration of the feast of Christmas? For Christians, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ -- not a shopping season -- so it starts on the day we celebrate His birth, December 25. Christmas Eve is called such because it is the evening before the feast. Then, Chriristmas is celebrated until the feast of the Magi in early January. We celebrate Advent for 4 weeks leading up to Christmas in preparation of the birth of our Savior. I think this has been confused over the years with Christmas already being here -- plus the retailers have pushed everything earlier each year for profits. People have thus reacted by beginning earlier over the years. The commercial aspects have driven the idea of starting on Thanksgiving or earlier.

Christmas Day is 12/25. Usually the "Christmas season" starts right after Thanksgiving and goes straight through to New Years.

The official day of the start of Christmas is known throughout the world as Black Friday, which is the day after US Thanksgiving.
All the stores open at 5 am and you have until 12 noon to fight with six other people for the last of this and the last of that at 60% off!

For many people, the Christmas season officially begins the day AFTER Thanksgiving- because that's when all the stores begin their holiday sale season. For others- Christmas seems to begin around Halloween- cuz that when the stores start advertizing for the holiday season. ... I think Christmas "officially" begins on December 26th- because THAT'S when the whole process starts all over again!!! And as for those people who DON'T celebrate Christmas- well they are just SOOO lucky... :)

Advent starts 4 Sundays before Christmas. This is when you and your family sit down everyday to read about the events that built up to Christmas and light a new candle each Sunday (pink on the first sunday, a new purple one each Sunday after that, and white on Christmas eve).
I take out decorations around the 6 Jan (12 days from Christmas), traditionally believed to be the Magi's festival.
