Take $517.45 and multiply it by .60. This is telling you what 60% of $517.45 is...or taking 40% off of it.

Percents are easy enough.
To find 40% of a number, just multiply by 40 and then divide by 100.
517.45 à 40 ÷ 100 = 206.98
517.45 – 206.98 = 310.47
$310.47
Or you can do it the other way around:
100% – 40% = 60%
517.45 à 60 ÷ 100 = 310.47
$310.47

40% of $517.45. $517.45 is 100%. Now break the problem into two parts: 1) 10% of $517.45 = $51.745; 2) 4* $51.745 = $206.98. Another method would be to convert 40% to .40, then multiply $517.45 * .40 = $206.98.
