Well we don't have them in Australia, they seem to be a very American thing. But we do get reports about 'hazing' and the peer pressure that goes on in them, which does not sound very good at all. I don't think they're necessary, in Australia we get along without them, but we are very easy going. I don't know but they seem to be very 'clicky' to me. I also hear of sororities and fraternities that are divided racially, which to me i think is a bad idea, there's no point in sticking to your own, people need to step outside the square and mingle and intergrate.

I don't think that all members of any group, sororities, fraternities, athletes or any activity should be grouped into one lumped category. I belong to a sorority and I know some women who belong to the organizations who are great...they are educated and have a very developed social conscious. But, I also know some that are complete airheads...but the same is true of any group/organization, not just fraternities and sororities. Who they are really depends on who they were and how self-aware that they were before they joined. I will admit that there have been some who were wonderful people until they joined an organization and then once they joined suffered an identity crisis....but again that happens in many different organizations. Like I said....it really depends on how self aware the woman was before membership and how confident she is in that identity, so that membership in anything doesn't negatively effect her.

Fraternities and sororities are a pretty varied bunch. There's probably many "social" frats that fit the stereotype of throwing keg parties and whatnot. However, many fraternities and sororities are based on community service, or a shared interest in pre-law, pre-med, business, etc. Although I am not a member of a Greek organization, the friends and resources that they provide can be very beneficial for one's social, academic and even future professional life.

They're expensive and overrated. I don't want to be judged by how involved I am with a group of people.

Not only that, but I can't imagine living with that many girls. I would absolutely die. We're catty, especially in large numbers and at that age.

Not only that, but the frats scare me with their drinking games and neanderthal mentality.

No thanks!

They probably help the people who are in them, at a time in their life when they're very insecure.
