The regular SAT costs about $60 and the subject tests cost around $40 plus an approximately $10 fee per test. I can't really remember. Join College Board online. This is where you have to register, plus they have tons of info on tests, college, careers, financial, aid, etc.
Most colleges want 2 subject tests submitted. I wish I had known that subject tests existed before senior year but no one told me. You should take a subject test right after you finish a class (e.g. chemistry, US history). They offer them in June, so that is a good time to take them. Start early and don't let the cost get in the way of taking them. They are very important and you can't wait until the last minute. Take the PSATs in your sophomore year and again in the beginning of junior year. In the winter of junior year, take the real SATs.
Some people wait until spring to take the regular SAT (I did this), but then if you want to take it over you dont have much time before early decision applications are due (November 1st). No SAT tests are offered in July, August, or September. I took the SAT in April (thankfully I didnt have to take it twice), the SAT II in US History in May, and the SAT II in Math I in June. Math I was too easy so I'm trying Math II in October, and also taking Spanish Reading. It can't hurt to try them. Pick your best 2 or 3 scores and send them to colleges. If you do really well, send more.
Note: If you take any AP (Advanced Placement) classes, the AP test will be in May. This is a perfect time to take a Subject Test in the same area. For example, I took the AP US History test on May 5th. The next morning I took the SAT II US History test. I only had to study once and I did pretty well.
Good luck! You have a long road ahead of you but don't freak out. It's really not as bad as it sounds. Plus you don't have to think about this stuff until maybe sophomore year. Sorry it was so long! lol

you don't have to take any subject tests if you don't want to. check the college to see if it requires it. Some colleges will even accept the ACT instead of the SAT and SAT subject tests! I'm taking 2 subject tests in a few weeks. I think 2 is the average for colleges that require it. Sorry I can't remember exactly how much it was but I believe it was around $50 for both combined (you take them on the same day).

It depends on the school. Most schools that require the Subject Tests ask for two subjects of your choice (usually Math or Literature...but if you are really good at one particular subject, like say US History, then show that you have exceptional knowledge there.). They are about 20 bucks each I think...try to get a free waiver from your guidance counselor if you are eligible. I'm taking my SAT in a couple of weeks too. Good luck!

I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.
