i was given this question and for some reason no matter what i try to put in as the answer i get the answer wrong. This is very aggrivating since this question is extremely easy, and goes as follows (please explain your answer).

"In the following calculation

( ( (5.70 x 11.41) − 7.2356) ÷ 0.053 ) + 1

the number 1 is defined as exact.

Give the correct answer to this calculation with the correct number of significant figures. "

i tried 1091 and it did not work and i tried 1091. and it did not work... people who post make sure you give correct SIGNIFICANT FIGURES please.

I think they are being tricky when they tell you that the number 1 is exact -- this means that it has an infinite number of digits after it -- it is exactly 1.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 etc.
So, this means that it does not count toward limiting the number of significant figures. So, look at the next smallest number of significant figures, and that will be your answer!

(I believe that would be 2 significant figures because 5.70 has 3, 11.41 has 4, 7.2356 has 5, but 0.053 has only two - that would make it 1100)

1100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason why it wasn't working is because of your sig figs. Since your answer is limited to the least sig figs, the limiter would be 0.053. This is because there are 2 sig figs in it (the 1 doesn't count since it is exact) and all the other numbers have more than 2 sig figs.

They should have also accepted 1,100 or 1100, as well as the 1.1 X10^3 that they did.

The answer is 1091.592... but since the number 1 has been defined as exact the answer can not have a decimal point. It needs to be rounded to 1092. A result can only be as accurate as the least accurate piece of data.

Begin with 5.70 x 11.41 = 65.037, in multiplication you are limited by the number of significant in the least accurate measurement. so (3 significant figures from 5.70)...65.0

Next 65.0 - 7.2356 = 57.7644, in addition and subtration you are limited by the decimel places so (1 decimel place from 65.0)....57.8

Next 57.8/0.053 = 1090.566038, in division you are limited by the number of significant in the least accurate measurement. so (that would be 2 in 0.053)... 1100

1100 + 1, again addition is limited by the number of decimel places so (since 1 is exact we are not limited by that value)... 1101

This is what I what I think the answer is, let me know if it is correct. Thanks

If 1 is exact, then I believe you'd then use the next amount of sig figs, which would be .01
