Just try visiting USC on a football weekend... not only do we not go home for the weekend, but we're innundated with fat drunk tailgating alums, people from the opposing team, and random fans. The campus is swarming with people wearing cardinal and gold.

On other weekend days, campus feels deserted, but you need look no farther than the frat houses to see where people have gone.

At my school most people stay around for the weekends. That's because we have students from all over the world, and very few from the immediate Portland area. I live relatively close and it's still a 9 hour drive or hour plane ride to get home. No way I'm doing that every weekend. And there are lots of people at my school from the East Coast. They're definitely not going home for weekends. Let alone people from Hong Kong or Africa.

In general, at schools where most of the students come from within a couple hours drive, the campus will tend to empty out on weekends. At schools that draw students from all over the country, or even all over the world, most people will stick around on weekends. Even the people who live nearby will tend to stay since there's more going on on weekends. Schools were most students live nearby are something to watch out for if you're going to school far from home.

if the campus doesn't have any good stuff going on, then people do. it depends on how far away you live...I don't personally but my mom told me that her college was a 'suitcase school' and it was deserted on the weekends. so really it depends on if there's anything interesting like concerts or activities around campus, or if it's just....dead.
