Alchemy refers to both an early form of the investigation of nature and an early philosophical and spiritual discipline, both combining elements of chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, semiotics, mysticism, spiritualism, and art. Alchemy has been practiced in Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persia, India, and China, in Classical Greece and Rome, in the Islamic Caliphates, and then in Europe up to the 19th century — in a complex network of schools and philosophical systems spanning at least 2500 years.

Jay Vee!!! My main man! How's it been?

Anyhow. Back to the subject.
Jay Vee got it on the head.
Alchemy is the Art of altering the natural world by chemicals and concrete laws.
FMA does seem like a bunch of BS but it was mostly true. Alchemists face their concentrations on studying chemistry. Learning things they cannot be tought normally, like "What goes up must come down."

EX: A unphilosophical chemistry student is messing with his home chemistry set and realizes "Hey. No matter what you do to the object, the matter is always there. It just gets molded some other way." So, the guy develops the mental standing of "Equivalent Exchange." He starts doing his homework becouse he FINALLY gets that you have to work to recieve what he most wants.
The unphilosophical kid is me at 9. The 15 year old me is now the smartest in his grade and Valedvictorian for sure in his senior year.

yes, but it's not that alchemy that you see on fullmetal alchemist. that alchemy is, how do i put this lightly... a load of crap. alchemy isn't turning lead into gold (although that was a goal of alchemy) and alchemy and chemistry were, and still are, nothing alike. Alchemy is the alteration of nature. if you're a bit sceptical about that, think of this: if a lump of coal is left in the ground long enough, it turns to dimond. Alchemy is that principal, only speeding it up. there were 4 basic elements that ancient alchemists believed the entire universe was constructed from. earth, water, wind, and fire. they later on discovered that the world is actually constructed from 7 elements, and later on chemistry divided these further. but the 7 alchemical elements are gold, silver, mecury, sulphur, quicksilver, calcium, and iron. Now, in the crap-load of an anime show that i'm sure all of you have seen at least once, they talk about the Phlisopher's Stone quite often. Although the stone is mentioned quite often in 18th century texts, it is not at all like the magic rock you see on fullmetal. in fullmetal alchemist, the Phlisopher's Stone is a blood red rock that requires millions of human souls to create and can bring people back from the dead. not so in real-world alchemy. as stated in a poem describing the stone...

"Though Daphne fly from Phoebus bright,
Yet shall they both be one,
And if you understand this right,
You have our hidden Stone.
For Daphne she is faire and white:
But Volatile is she;
Phoebus a fixed God of might,
And red as blood is he.
Daphne is a Water Nymph,
And hath of Moysture store,
Which Phoebus doth consume with heate,
And dryes her very sore.
They being dryed into one,
Of christall flood must drinke,
Till they be brought to a white Stone:
Which wash with Virgins milke,
So longe untill they flow as wax,
And no fume you can see,
Then have you all you neede to aske,
Praise God and thankfull be."
~~~
...and for those of you not familar with 14th century english...
~~~
"Though dark and light may be seprate,
in this stone they both are one
and if you can get your head around that,
that's what this stone is.
a powerful white chemical (to this day unidentified)
and a stable red chemical (thought to be mecury)
and water (a "sore" being roughly 5 ounces)
let dry, this causes the chemicals to become a powder
drink the remaining fluid (not precicly sure why, but aparently very important)
When dry, the stone should be white
wash with breast milk of a virgin (?)
it should then have the consistancy of wax
make sure there are no holes in the stone.
and you're pretty lucky to have gotten it."
~~~
and that's pretty much all about the Stone.
any other questions? just e-mail me.
oh, and yes, there are modern day alchemists, myself included. and Hytegia, nice to see you too.
