My baby guinea pig seems to have some breathing problem, making some kind of sound like 'bop bop bop bop' and keeps shaking back and forth, he never tries to eat or suckle. I once lost three babies with the same problem, and the vet doesn't seems to know the answer. Did anyone has the same problem and solution?

I found an answer for someone the other day with a guinea pig that was losing hair. In the process I found a really good web page dedicated to the health and care of guinea pigs, the link is below.

In looking there, it mentions Upper Respiratory Infection and Circulatory problems as being suspects in Guineas with labored breathing.

The two symptoms you mentioned (labored breathing and refusal to eat) are both listed as symptoms of URI (but could be symptoms of other conditions as well). URI does sound likely and the other users on here may have named the possible cause already......your bedding material.

Signs of a URI:
Refusal to eat or drink (anorexia)
No feces (as a result of not eating)
Labored breathing, wheezing
Sneezing, coughing
Crusty eyes, eyes that are almost sealed shut
Discharge from eyes or nose (read about normal Eyes)
Dull and/or receding eyes
Rough or puffed-up coat
Lethargy, hunched posture

This page is an Emergency Medical guide to identify signs of illness: http://www.guinealynx.info/emergency.html

This page gives more info on URI:
http://www.guinealynx.info/uri.html

I hope that helps......that site should be a good reference if you hadn't already been there before.

(You might consider visiting a different Vet for another opinion?)

Your guinea pig may be sick and MUST see a vet, regardless of if you think they cant help it.. because maybe they CAN help and maybe this guinea pig didnt have the exact same problem as your other ones. I had a hamster for a few months and for some reason one day it just stayed in a corner and didn't eat for a few days. I didn't think anything was wrong until I found it one morning dead. It's better to bring it to a vet than to just leave it there because maybe you could have helped it...

it the bedding ur using...rodents have very sensitive respirtory so pine and cedor is the worse possible bedding u can use. try using aspen or recycled paper. there market sells bedding made of recycled paper wit non toxic ink, NEVER USE KITTY LITTER! i dun know why ple use it but its the worse to use. dont use netrhing that can obviously collect dust becuase can do u much wrong. if all else fails it is best to use cotton rags and news paper...it is better then pine and cedor. My rats are cared wit aspen and there are going great with my white one has had the same problem and now she is better because the pet shop i got her from they used cedor, and they still do (i feel bad for the rats and mice living in that closed fish tank with cedor) well i hope i answered or atleast helped u wit ur question...nemore question about rodents and bedding look it up online and you'll get tons of info....thats wut i did before buying my rats
good luck to u and ur guinea pig.

what kind of bedding are you using??? Pine and Cedar bedding are terrible for your piggies and can cause respitory problems very easily. Use only Aspen or recycled bedding (yesterdays news or Carefresh) because there are no oils or added scent to upset your pigs delicate lungs... and make sure you add vitamin C to their water supply!
