I started my 5.5 month old daughter on rice cereal last week. I t took a good 4 days for her to get used to swallowing but now enjoys eating it. Since we started i have noticed an increase in gas. SHe passes gas quite frequesntly throughout the day. Does starting solids usually cause this?

Since she's been on rice for a couple of days, you can switch her over to another grain, like oatmeal. I found that it caused less gas in my 6 month old. We only stayed on oatmeal for a couple of days and we started sweet potatoes today. But we're up to two meals a day. Oatmeal for breakfast and then the veggies.

However, switching to solids will cause more gas because her digestive system is working differently now. But I would stay away from naturally gassy foods and maybe put some mylicon in her bottles at other times.

If the gas doesn't seem to be a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have to agree with everyone else - it's normal as the digestive system learns to break down the new foods. But you also have to be aware of constipation. Becuase it is a solid food she could get bunged up until her system learns how to function accordingly - that is a whole different topic so i'll leave it at that. Just watch her poops... they will become nastier and have more substance to them, as long as she isn't in pain due to gas cramps and or constipated then continue on. I suggest keeping with the SAME new food for at least 7 days, to give her little body time to accept and get use to it - this also alows plenty of time for allergic reactions to show. If all goes well the first week, next week change to something else. Just keep it on the "one change a week rule" until you've "tested" with the cereals and all goes well. THen you can start mixing and matching with no worries. I know it sounds like a boring meal time wihtout putting in the changes - but they (infants) don't realize this as they have had nothing but milk/formula, so anything new even eating it for a month is a "treat". Good luck!

If it's not bothering her, I wouldn't worry. If it does try the gas drops. If that doesn't help ask her doc. I started my baby early on cereal and recently started him on 1st foods with no problems.
