I want to play a real instrument, not just a jaw harp or jug.

The real question is what instrument are you interested in playing. Every instrument has their pros and cons to them. If you really want to play an instrument I suggest that you go to musical instrument stores and test out the instruments yourself. Ask the salespeople any questions that you might have about them.

Piano is probably the "easiest" because you don't need to rely on others to perform (IMHO).

It also can play a "complete" song with chords and rhythm. That doesn't mean it's "Easy" though...All instruments have their difficulties!

If you're more into wind instruments, try 'em all out at a music store! For me, clarinet was the "easiest" but some ppl like sax or trumpet too.

As far as strings, I have NO idea! Guitar maybe???

FYI, Triangle is NOT necessarily easy! Cajun/Zydeco triangle can be REALLY TOUGH!

No instrument is easy.

if you're looking to just play by yourself consider the guitar or piano.

But if you'll be playing with a band or orchestra, look into other instruments.

Best bet is always piano because you learn both treble and bass clef, plus all the key and time signatures and chords. And once you learn piano everything else after comes easier.

The triangle would be pretty simple I imagine...

Honestly, if you only want to learn an instument that is easy, then why bother at all? Surely the reason to want to learn to play something is to challenge yourself.

Rather than basing your decision on simplicity, I suggest you base it on what instrument you like - that way you will be more inclined to practice.

Baritone Horn -- but only if you don't have to carry it home!
I also liked the bass trombone -- but only when I didn't have to march with it.

You could also get one of those piano primer books, and buy an inexpensive electronic keyboard.
