Parents, what do you expect when you attend a school's open house? What do you expect from the teacher? What would make your evening more special or worthwhile? I am a teacher getting ready for Open House and I want to make it the most beneficial to parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I teach 4th and 5th grade)

Our school stresses that this is NOT conference night and it not appropriate to discuss individual children's progress or grades during this time.

Just a question. We've only been in school for 3 weeks, we haven't done a lot of projects or things to show off... I teach JUST math for both grades.

My son and daughter study in a (supposed to be a famous)school in Chennai,India.I have been to this Open House umpteen times.I do not think these interactions will give some fruits. It is only a drama to uplift the image of the school.Parents are always at the receiving and losing end.Parents do not pluck up courage to question teachers.Every parent expects too much from thier children.Students ability can be nurtured only if the students take interest.Out of 40 to 50 students how a teacher can perfectly judge a student? A student's mentality too changes as he grows up.We should not grill the students. What I have observed here is it is not the school which plays important role,it is a team work, parents and teachers should amicably inculcate the importance of education in them.It should be a sort of group discussions where everyone participates instead of comparing students.'Confidence building measures'should be iniated to face real life.

How nice of you to ask:) I, incidently, am a parent to a 4th grader and I love to have a chance to see the classroom my son is in and to hear what is expected of us during the coming year. I'd also love to hear some personal info about you and and what I can do to help you throughout the year. Make me feel like you want me to be a partner with you in educating my child. Make me feel like the door is always open. Above all, make me believe that you think my child is as awesome, smart, unique and talented as I do :)
Good luck to you!

I like to go to open houses to get to know the teachers, and to find out how my kid is doing. So be yourself, and tell me what your expectations are for the year, and how my kid is doing so far. So show me your syllabus. I want to know that you want the best for my child, no matter their level. I want to know how much help I am allowed to provide my child, and I want to know how to reach you when I have a question or a problem. And of course ask me if I have any questions or concerns I want to discuss.

have folders for each student about his progress and what area need help. showcase a class project and talk about why it was important. talk to each parent and ask them if they have any concerns or questions. try to get them involved. arrange the room so that it has flow, so people don't just walk in the door and stop..maybe even a suggestion box for the kids and parents. good luck.
