Most contractors charge by the job, not the day. If you're doing minor repairs, see what local handymen (handymans?) in your area are making. If you're doing a full-on renovation, set your fee based on the entire job, including materials, subcontract labor (if any), debris hauling, design work, etc and of course a profit for yourself.

You really should give a firm price for a specific job and put it in writing. Just figure your time and materials and then factor in what you think your competition would charge for the same job.

There is no joy in bidding optimistically or in being a low baller. Money is made from being pessimistic. Make sure you are charging enough that you will be willing to do what it takes to leave your customer happy with the job, and recommending you to their friends. Part of that is reading the customer before you bid the job.
