In terms of movie-watching, people go to the movies to enjoy the "theater experience". A big screen, surround sound, an audience that laughs along at the funny parts and cries along at the sad parts and screams along as the monsters jump out - it's a unique event that can't properly be replicated outside of the movie theater.
In terms of going out on a date, "dinner and a movie" is the old standby for first dates. Many people enjoy taking a girl to a movie because it's dark and they're sitting next to each other - plenty of opportunity to slip an arm around behind the chair of their date. If it's a comedy, you and your date get to have a good laugh together (provided it's a good comedy). If it's a romance, most guys aren't really in it for the movie - it's an invitation to making out, pretty much. If it's a scary movie, then it's the "tunnel of love" effect - the guys assume they can handle whatever the movie throws at them, and that the girls will freak out and seek comfort in their "brave" date.
Most of all, it's a nice way to spend some quality time with a date, without a terrible amount of effort. Choose a movie, get to the theater, get your tickets, and sit on your duff for anywhere between an hour and a half to three hours. Moderately low effort, and usually with a good, positive return.

Your kidding right? Okay, let's see...
At the movies, you see the movie on a BIG HUGE screen.
At home, you see it on a at least 30 inch tv.
At the movies, you get popcorn in a bucket, candy, and a drink.
At home, you get microwaved popcorn, icecream from the container, and a cup of grape juice.
At the movies, you get to laugh along with 30 other people.
At home, you get to hear your father snoring.
The movies are way cooler! Too bad they're way expensiver too.

It's dark, you are sitting together, and what happens in the theater stays in the theater. Paintballs only lead to bruises, laundry, and getting your eye poked out.
