In England, you will do it all in 4 years, so if you can go there, do it. If you're in america, you'll need an undergraduate degree (4 years), and then you'll have to go to vet school (4 extra years). One of my fraternity brother's dad is the head of the UC Davis Vet School which happens to be the best in the Country.

Four yrs. undergraduate, and 4-5 more in Veterinary School. It is actually harder to become a vet than an Medical Doctor because animals cannot tell you where it hurts. (Honestly)
I have friends who are vets.
