Definitely 714 the total number of career home runs hit by Babe Ruth. Although Balco Barry has more and Hammerin' Hank has more. If you would ask the average person to state what comes to mind first when given the number 714, they most likely would response with Ruth's total. I don't think many can say that for Hanks 755. What Babe did in the amount of time and type of baseball that was being played at that time is simply amazing and will forever live as baseballs greatest legend.

The "big number" is not a strict definition, but is any round-numbered career milestone indicating significant achievement: 500 home runs, 300 pitching wins, 2000 hits, etc.
For a big number as in an unbeatable record, it's not Aaron's home runs or Rose's hits or DiMaggio's hitting streak but Cy Young's 511 pitching wins. 23 victories every year for 22 years would leave you 5 short of the record.
