My husband worked for Home depot for years and from that we now know that if you put a temp safe bowl (not plastic) and put it in the very bottom of the dishwasher (below the racks) and fill it with bleach and run it through the cycle. My mom has several rent houses that were badly abused, some even used for trash cans! We were unable to fix them and found out about the bleach thing.... Immediately they were completely clean! The bleach will eat up all of the particles and clean them out of the system. Also remember that you MUST run your garbage disposal every time before yourun the dishwasher to do the fact that the water runs through it and can backwash into your machine. Good luck and I hope that all goes well with your machine! Nothing worse than a stink that won't go away!!!

I can't imagine what is causing this smell in your dishwasher, except that there is maybe a problem with the way the dishwasher drains. It could be as simple as the garbage disposal not working right, or as complicated as a problem with the plumbing. I'm not sure the smell would be coming from the dishwasher itself.

Sprinkle a handful of Baking Soda on the dishes or in the bottom of the dishwasher to absorb food odors in the dishwasher. Use Baking Soda to deodorize before you run the dishwasher and then as a gentle cleanser in the wash cycle.

There is a couple products for you to try at the store. But first you may want to try vinegar. It is great for cleaning the inside of appliances to eliminate odors and help with hard water buildup and soap build up. Run your machine through a regular cycle with a cup of vinegar. If you do this once a month it'll keep things fresh. Products you could try:
Lemi-shine (my favorite)

I wasnt going to answer this question, until I noticed one thing that wasnt said. I'm sure if you have a food waste disposal, The dishwasher drains into it. Look under the sink at the disposal, find the drain line and browse to see if the drain line goes out of disposal and straight down to the dishwasher. This line should be elevated at least 4 to 6 inches abobe where it drains out.And of course make sure that its draining.

I usually just turn it on with only a few things in it and I use the orange smelling cleaner to make it smell better. And sometimes the smell is actually stale water so the problem might actually be that the water is staying inside the washer. Be sure to let it air out after running a load.

Many dishwashers have a screen or drain that collects food particles and stuff. It may be on the interior floor of the dishwasher.
It's always helpful to have a user's manual for this sort of thing, if not, you might want to check on-line using manufacturer and model number info.

wow, that shouldnt be happening. Are you using enough soap?
you should prevent chunks of food going into the dish washer. Try to throw away any leftovers before you place the dishes in the machine.
I have no idea how to eliminate the odor, but check your food disposal sometimes the smell can go to the sink or the dish washer.

Sounds like there might be something caught in the drain. Make sure there is nothing there. Try diluting bleach 3 parts water to 1 part bleach. That should do away with it.
