38 years here. Laugh a lot. Nothing is that serious. We cannot even remember the last fight. Nothing to fight about. If you want to fight, go to Iraq
Also, let them have the last word, so what?
Help each other
Listen
Never criticize.
Oh, my parents were married 77 years.

Happily married 21 years (to the same man).
I agree that laughing about stuff keeps you sane, but once you add kids into the mix it becomes a little more difficult. More demands are placed upon you, and your marriage can suffer if you don't take time for each other. Making dates with each other can help. Simply going to the grocery store together, without the kids, if possible, gives you time to at least have a conversation without getting interrupted. Keeping it spicey in the bedroom always adds to that closeness also.

The secret to a lasting relationship, and therefore a happy one, is communication - verbal and non verbal. Talking about everything ... the movie, the kids, food, sex, the mortgage payment, etc. That way you always know how the other feels about things. You don't have to agree on everything, but if you know the other is troubled or stressed, you can help. If you don't know, you can't help. Show your love for each other. Little things like bringing her a cup of coffee in the morning, or cleaning out her car, fixing him his fav meals. Take time to be alone together. Get away from the kids. It doesn't have to be a week at an island resort, just go for a drive together, a movie. Have date nights. We ran into trouble at around 10 yrs. Our counselor taught us to communicate. We hadn't been. We just celebrated 40 yrs. Communication is the key. Good sex is also great to have.

I've answered similar questions a couple of times. My husband and I have been married for almost 17 years. I think the secret is respect. Respect each other's privacy, each other's family and friends. Show affection every day. Listen to each other. You don't have to share every interest. As a matter of fact, you'll be a more interesting person to your spouse if you have some different hobbies and pursuits. Take care of yourself physically and spiritually.
Keep your sense of humor, keep your cool and lose your inhibitions in the bedroom.
Take time for yourself as a couple. Some men have to be dragged out of the house, but quiet dinners, just the two of you, weekend retreats and road trips are necessary for facilitating communication, cooperation and romance.
Enjoy each other. Appreciate each other.

A desire to commit yourself to the happiness of someone else. That desire born of deep deep love, respect, compassion, desire, trust, communication, etc. Absolutely refuse to fight over things that can be easily worked out like money. I joke with my wife that there is no reason to fight over such a small (meaning my income) thing. Yea it's a lot of work everyday. But how hard is it really to say I love you every day, and mean it. Is it that hard really to remember a birthday, and an anniversary? I take a lot of pride in the fact that I have never, no not once, forgotten my wifes birthday, or our anniversary. Do things together, and do things apart. Never stop talking to one another. Even if you have to communicate pain, or anger, or emotional hurt, it's still better than clamming up and letting something fester inside you. Realize that with time comes change. After generations of time together people are way different in physical appearance, perhaps attitude, and maybe health. Don't wake up some day and wonder who that is sleeping next to you. Realize change happens, and incorporate it into your lives. Communicate with every glance and comment how much your spouse means to you. Let them know they are appreciated always. Never be complacent, or uncaring. Always be vigilant as to the health of your relationship, and make it job 1 in your life.

on the same time as we are no longer married 15+ yrs (in trouble-free terms 8 yrs) we had long term 1st marriages (17 and 20 yrs) earlier the divorce. We found out dissimilar useful suggestions on a thank you to maintain a marriage loving and lasting. the main severe is communication - you will be waiting to speak approximately reliable and undesirable issues including out dissimilar battling. you may paintings at retaining your marriage alive and robust on a daily basis. never take your significant different with none attention or assume they know what to do, and so on. Spouses are no longer techniques readers. paintings out issues collectively - particularly whilst it is composed of little ones/disapline and funds. while you're no longer on the comparable internet site with those issues, you have got many greater fights and which will tear down the marriage. continuously admire one yet another and not in any respect use intercourse as a weapon (withholding, and so on). manage one yet another such as you decide directly to be dealt with.

sept 16 was 30th anv........ NO secret........ a good marriage comes in all forms...... each couple who is happy will tell you their own stories and some things will be the same as mine and a lot of it will be different..... comparing marriages is not fair.... as long as there is trust, respect, compassion and love , all the other little junk will not make much difference or matter....... but the most important thing is to remember that you are 2 ppl, NOT 1.... you are a team, but a team is made of 2 or more...... God bless

Laugh at each other, and with each other
NEVER go to bed or leave the house without saying I love you ESPECIALLY when you are fighting.
Perform Random act of kindness/sweetness.
This could be something little like maybe your spouse ALWAYS dusts, and you know they are tired or busy, dust FOR them, random acts of sweetness wake up before them on the weekend and make them breakfast in bed with their favorite newspaper... and EAT it with them!
Be spontaneous- one boring weekend when you don't have much to do go for a hike, or a spectacular restaurant.
Remember how you felt the first day you kissed that person, and the day you said "I Do", and never let that feeling fade.
Communicate... argue and fight (kindly and respectfully) no bad names or it's YOUR fault. It is never JUST their fault. talk things out and really think about what they are saying.
Love them like you want to be loved, speak to them like you want to be spoken to, and take care of them like you want to be cared for.
Be loyal.
