Have cable internet and trying set up internet connection for two computers, each using its own cable modem and jack in seperate rooms. I know, routers or wireless would be best, but this way is preferable for our situation. Can it work?

Yes, each modem will have to be assigned their own unique IP by your provider. Expect to pay additional $$'s for the extra IP.

To work you would have to have two accounts. The cable co.'s computers have the MAC address of your cable modem stored in it's memory,, so which ever you hook up first and activate with them will work,, the other won't,, that's why you can only use a router behind a single modem.

You should call your ISP (Internet service provider) and see about this. Usually there is only one incoming/outgoing connection in a house. If you have 2 cable modems they might charge you for 2 services. However if you are using the same phone number then you might be safe. Call them up and ask them if this can work.

Okay, heres what you need to know:

Yes, its possible.

No, its not a great idea.

These modems can be very pricy! Some people pay for theirs upto 5 dollars a month. Or some people pay more than a hundred dollars to buy one. From a pure cost standpoint I would set up a basic wifi network. If you consiter yourself savvy you can opt for the wired network.

I don't have cable, i have DSL. but if you place 2 modem on one line...both modem will be looking for a ip address. it is just easier to buy a router.

Its possible, but why? it makes no sense that its preferable over a router. It will cost you more money and will not be any faster.
