ask.com, metacrawler.com and, of course, yahoo.com are all good search engines. WIKIPEDIA.com is a bad tool to use for research, it should only be used for fun and NEVER relied on. ANYONE can edit/submit material to wikipedia.com and over 80% of the information on wikipedia.com is either wrong or misinterpreted.

Use boolean searches. The more robust your search is, the better the quality of your results. Good boolean searches work (with only small tweaking) with almost all search engines.
Also, simply enter "search engines" in yahoo to get lists of other good engines.

Depends on what you are researching.
There are literally dozens of search engines.
Yahoo, dogpile, wikipedia are a few
Lexis Nexis for legal
There are others for background checking, financial and other special areas.
