with computers! They don't understand. They must read the National Enquirer and watch "Dateline" all day and get scared of predators, etc. They think I'll meet an unsavory character here.

Same problem here with my grandfather, same reasons, too.
You have to let them know that the internet isn't all predators and scams. Only people looking for predators and giving out their address gets kidnapped, only people who willingly hand over their credit card get scammed.
All you have to do is convince them that it's not all bad.

Things are so different today than they used to be. There are so many people who use the Internet to do wrong. I understand their fear, however I wish they would do something about it by surfing the net themselves. They would find that there are lots of good things on the Internet.
Online or offline, we need to protect ourselves.
Do they have a computer or can you get them involved with one so they may be able to see first hand how good it actually is. There are many websites for seniors and middle aged people to enjoy and these sites are also very helpful.
I know I wish my people would get computers, but like you said, some of them are afraid of the Internet.
The Internet is one of the best things to ever have happened in life.

My dad was a cop when the internet was becoming popular in the late 90's. He was very resistant to getting the internet, but he finally caved. However, he says that we are not allowed on the computer past 11:00pm because "the predators are on!".
It's horrible!

Maybe they are just old and afraid of technology period. A lot of old people are. Some people can't except computers,may sound strange but it is true.
