Beautiful and vain, she loved anyone that would profess undying love for her. And there are hints of incest in her relationship with Hamlet, whose hatred for the new king was fueled in no small part by jealousy. And Gertrude was pleased to have fed that jealousy, regardless of the consequences - such was the nature of their mutual love.

Excuse me, it's a play.

Any number of movies have been made, and in any production, screen or stage, the director will have a say in how Gertrude is portrayed. The best way to assess her character is to read the play for yourself, as Shakespeare wrote it.

she was depraved, incestuous, (she married her brother in law), and condoned the vindictiveness around (and aimed at) her son, and possibly former secret sex toy, Hamlet himself. No wonder he acted crazy to the point of his lady love committing suicide!
