I had my left knee worked on a couple of years ago. The most important thing is to wait until the anesthesia wears off before you try anything. Your pain will be your best guide for the first couple of days. Depending on the extent of the surgery you may take anywhere from a week to a month to recover, and more to get back to full strength. I can't believe your surgeon didn't address these issues with you. Take it easy, work it slowly at first and your recovery will go better. Good Luck

I have not had knee surgery, but I'm a RN and I write health articles. So, to assist with your questions.

How long is the recoverty time: 4 weeks

Painful: Not much

The knee is a joint, a joint that is active, if you think about it when you walk it is always active, back and forth, back and forth. Try this; rub your hands together, 5 times, now 10 times. Go ahead do it. What did you notice after the 10th time. Heat and stimulation! Now back to the knee, you can see that if you exercise, walk, what ever more than you should you will feel heat, stimulation and after stimulation of a surgical site you will feel swelling, and pain. So be wise, slow down, do exactly as you doctor says. You can run another time.

Recovery time is EXACTLY the same as the length of time for regular surgery. About 6 weeks. It's not very painful at all. The only thing that was painful for me was that they wrapped it too tight and it swelled when I got home, so I had to rewrap it. If your toes turn bluish or black GO BACK TO THE ER and have them rewrap it, it makes a HUGE difference. Also, follow the directions of the physician and do NOT walk on it at all until he says it's okay. Do your physical therapy religiously. You WILL recover faster that way!

The cost of knee joint replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. You can get the surgery done there in a fraction of cost of what would you pay in USA or private UK

There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges orthopaedic surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for American and Canadian patients as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by NHS in the UK.They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your joint surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery for in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. Hope this helps.
