Just start off with what you're comfortable with, and then push yourself a little farther each time (maybe add 1/2 mile per week) You'll work up to it in no time, esp. as young as you must be if you are still in school ! Trust me. I'm 43 and didn't start running until I was in my late 30's. Now, I run 10K's and have run two 1/2 marathons !

alright heres a good way to run your top time. It takes time, although if you do this right, you will see results in a week or two.
Day One: Four mile run. Dont stop running no matter what, it doesnt matter how fast you go as long as you keep running until the finish (plus its really gratifying when you accomplish this).
Day Two: Weight lifting. Do lighter weights with high reps. Focus mostly on the leg muscles and core: quads, glutes, calfs, hammys, abs. but also do some upper body stuff. After this go on a two mile run and remember dont stop. When you've been doing this for a while, the two mile run should be hard and you should really try to go hard.
Day Three: Another four mile run.
Day Four: Just weight lifting: high weight, low rep. again focus on the legs and core but do different exercises working these muscles.
Now repeat this cycle. This stuff is fairly easy and very gratifying when you do it. Also remember to always stretch after running. I guarantee you'll do alot better in meets. Whenever you're feeling overworked take a day off about every week.

Just get out there and run for as long as your comfortable. Find out how long that was and try to beat it each time.
Remember, even a thousand mile journey starts with one step.
