I don't think you understand, the American guy dumped his wife and 2 children for a transvestite. he moved to Thailand to "marry" her/him.

Please excuse the young kids of Yahoo! Answers. They know not what they say.
You call her whatever she prefers to be called; transgendered or she.
This obviously wasn't an easy decision that she had to make. No person wants to give up their family. However, this man was mistakenly born as the wrong sex. her natural body was that of a man's, yet her brain was more similarly wired to a females; this left her feeling uncomfortable with the body she had. To overcome this feeling of being uncomfortable in her own skin, he had a sex change change.
She most likely had the procedure done in Thailand because sex change surgeries there are done at a greatly reduced cost; transgendered people in Thailand is not as taboo as it still is here in the states.
I cannot speak for the person in question. She may still be attracted to women and from now on carry on lesbian relationships with women, or she may be attracted to men and carry on heterosexual relationships with them. Only she can tell you that.
The only thing you can be sure of is that it was done with a lot of thought, consideration, and the greatest concern for all involved.
Just because she is not with her family, doesn't mean that she "abandoned" them. The former wife might not be comfortable carrying on a now lesbian love affair with her former partner, may not be willing to accept her husband's sexual change, or is just a transgender-phobic like many people here seem to be.

There has to be a reason why he would leave his wife, but to leave his children is bad if hes not going to support them. I mean why would he leave a chick for a guy? Theres more to it than that I think but thats my 2 cents.
