Cover ALL of your hair with mayonaise or olive oil. Cover the hair with a shower cap overnight. Get up the next morning and wash your hair really well. Comb out all of the nits with a fine tooth comb. Treat all bedding, pillows and pullover shirts. If you still have them afterwards, go to the pharmacy and get some NIX.

An age old remedy "Kerosene" Soak the hair with it and wrap a cloth around head when you go to bed at night. This should take care of the lice. The eggs "nits" have to be taken out manually

Old fashioned Listerine may help, but you really need a lice comb if you have any hair. The head is just the start, they get in your sheets and maybe furniture. Just go ahead and buy the best stuff you can get and delouse yourself quickly.

After reading some of the answers they gave to your post, I felt I had to give you the right thing to do.
First off, " Don't panic ", easier said than done, let me tell you.

1) everyone in the household has to be treated.

2) purchase a Pediculicide such as Nix, Rid, Kwelada, R&C,
we used Nix or Kwelada. Plus a good nit comb, the ones that come in the boxes of treatment are not very good.

3).Reading directions apply to everyone's head. After rinsing off, get a cup of white vinegar to dip your comb in as it will loosen any nits you pick off on the comb. Comb through everyone's hair.

4). Apply to everyone's hair & this is important, OLIVE OIL freely and leave on hair for a good 8 hours or overnight. Wrap head with a plastic shower cap. Rinse off with a dish detergent " sunlight or other type, Using nit comb again , comb through everyone's hair.

5) During this time, start cleaning the enviroment. Wash all bedding, towels, clothing, pillows, with hot soapy water, and then vacum mattresses, couches, chairs, carpets, car seats, baby seats. Anything that can't be washed such as stuffed toys, etc. right away put in plastic garbage bags and set them outside or in garage away from regular living space.

6) Purchase from pharmacy: Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, after the
" olive oil treatment " use the shampoo. And you can use this shampoo on a daily basis thereafter because lice & nits don't care for this kind of enviroment to thrive in.

7) You are going to repeat the Olive Oil treatment 5 days after the initial Kwelada treatment, and 9 days after also, and 13 days after, 17 days after, 21 days after, 25 days after, and 29 days after. Also use the tea tree shampoo after each Olive oil treatment. Your going to keep cleaning the environment as long as you continue to find nits.

If infestation is severe enough you might want to use a commercial spray called ( R&C), but it is pretty nasty stuff and use it in well ventilated area.
Don't worry about pets as human head lice do not infest cats or dogs, they have their own brand of lice.
By using the oil treatment your hoping to disrupt the cycle and eliminate any lice that are able to hatch before they mature.
Go through hair carefully in bright light, pulling out all remaining nits. It will be hard for your child to sit through, try to have someone there who can talk or read to your child during this time.
Good luck in getting rid of these pesky pests, I've been there with my three kids. In schools they thrive.

An old non toxic remedy was to coat your scalp and hair thickly with baby oil or mineral oil and leave it on overnight. Then shampoo it out in the morning.
(Wear a disposable shower cap while sleeping).
The oil suffocates the bugs. Be sure to comb out ALL the nits.

use rit and a nit comb. i would just go to your local pharmacy and buy a treatment, something that is known to work to get the problem taken care of quickly rather that try old fashioned remedies. that stuff is a pain to get ris of if it gets out of control.
