I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and twice within the past couple of days, the steering wheel has locked up WHILE driving as if I had turned the vehicle off and removed the key. Fortunately no one was hurt and it's going in the shop tomorrow, but I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas why this would happen....

Maybe something else caused it to malfunction. Maybe a previous repair to steering column damage wasn't performed correctly. Is there anything else unusual about the locking mechanism?

Grande Alacran is the reason I became a mechanic. So I wouldn't have to go to Poop Boys. They hire a bunch of hacks and their parts are garbage too. In this case, I'd listen to dodge man. It's most likely a problem with your ignition cylinder. Being a Jeep, it doesn't have a rack and pinion, so it could also be a sttering shaft joint, but wouldn't know w/o looking at vehicle.

yes i have seen it happen before,,it means someone has tried to install a new key and tumblers in it before ,,and messed it up,,it has as small pin that comes down when in the off position,,and locks the steering ,,once this is damaged it can lock at any time on you,,i own a repair shop here in Tennessee,,and i have seen a lot of them messed up,from other mechanics who didn't know how to do it right,,its a sad thing,,because you may have to get another column to make it right, i have had to get a few because of this, and there kind of hard to find,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.

Sounds to me like the power steering pump, fluid is low, leak in the like, bad rack, power steering belt broke or other. I seriously doubt it's and ignition key problem as mentioned above. I would say if your real lucky you just broke the belt this is the most common reason vehicles are towed in to our shop for no power steering.

A few reasons are....The powersteering pump is going bad, The ball joints Are bad, The steering ujoints are bad, Your steering dampener could be binding up"it's like a shock absorber for your steering"These are the best descriptions I can give without seeing the truck.

rack is no good get it changed now , if you must drive it, do it slowly carefully only to the shop, count your self lucky it unlocked. the rack is a worm gear , one or more of the teeth are worn or broke. or the rack may be bent? if you hit anything this could have done it.
