a parasitic relationship is where a host organism completely sustains the life of a dependent organism. a parasite has it's nutrition, homeostasis, and environment completely regulated by the nutrition, homeostasis, and environment of the host organism. in some parasites such as parasitic worms, viruses, some bacteria and parasitic insects they use the host organism until it becomes detrimental and disastrous (i.e. deadly) to them. in non invasive parasitic relationships the parasitic organism such as other bacteria, yeast, and so on uses the host in such a way as not to harm them or so that the host does not even know they are there. however still use the host in the same way.

For instance a dog has a parasite called a flea. The dog gets no benefit from the parasitic relationship with the flea. Dogs get fleas, ticks, worms, fungi, etc...

A parasitic relationship is one in which one organism, the parasite, lives off of another organism, the host, harming it and possibly causing death. The parasite lives on or in the body of the host.
A few examples of parasites are tapeworms, fleas, and barnacles. Tapeworms are segmented flatworms that attach themselves to the insides of the intestines of animals such as cows, pigs, and humans. They get food by eating the host's partly digested food, depriving the host of nutrients. Fleas harm their hosts, such as dogs, by biting their skin, sucking their blood, and causing them to itch. The fleas, in turn, get food and a warm home. Barnacles, which live on the bodies of whales, do not seriously harm their hosts, but they do itch and are annoying.

When the term is used to describe a relationship between two people it means one is living off the other, trying to get the other person to meet all his/her needs, and doing nothing to offer anything back to the "host" person.
It can mean someone is a "parasite" when it comes to finances or else emotional issues.
The "host" person gets nothing back and can feel as if he/she is "having the life sucked out" of him/her.
