It's a synthetic version of the naturally occuring female hormone, progesterone, which is released from a follicle after ovulation. Progesterone is what tells your body to prepare for a period. If you aren't having a period, you probably aren't ovulating which is why you aren't producing progesterone or having a period.

Provera will induce your period. For me it usually took a few days after I finished the prescription for my period to start. Provera only brings on a period. It will not cause you to ovulate and it's only helpful for that particular cycle.

My ob/gyn prescribed it for me for the same reason. It didn't make me gain weight, as it did the first answerer. However, it did make my period VERY heavy (like needing an overnight maxi every hour or two). My doctor said this is normal because there was a lot of build-up in the lining of my uterus since I hadn't had a period in several months.

When I was trying to get pregnant, I took it and then took a fertility drug early on in the cycle. Your ob/gyn may have you do this if taking just the provera doesn't work to get you pregnant.

I now take it every 2 - 3 months (pretty much whenever I feel like it), so as to keep myself regular. But then, I'm not trying to get pregnant.

Good luck!
