Proportionally, who do you think is faster? A cheetah or a common garden-variety tree squirrel?

depends where they're going.

cheetahs aren't good at tree hopping and squirrels aren't good at catching gazelles.

think of a tree squirrel the size of a cheetah--the cheetah would get jealous and be sad and sit in his corner, while the squirrel would sway his giant fluffy tail in ecstasy and hop a lot.

overall = squirrel

I believe the cheetah would come out ahead, even proportionally. The cheetah is about 4 times the length of the squirrel, but its top speed is certainly more than 4x the top speed of the squirrel. What would beat a cheetah proportionally though is various kinds of insects. A cockroach can easily cover more than 6 feet per second. That's about 72x its own length per second. To match that speed proportionally a cheetah would have to run 147 mph. The critters that really amaze me though are those little bright red mites that you see on warm stone walls on a sunny day. They are less than 1/16 of an inch long, yet they can run about 6 inches per second, on legs less than 2 mm in length! That's about 100x their own length per second. To match it proportionally a cheetah would have to run over 200 mph.

Hi. I think the cheetah. Most of the squirrels around here hop, not run.
