first of all do not get under your car unless it is on jack stands. $25 at auto zone can save your life. The jack has a bypass leak in the seal. More than likely you have an inexpensive jack. it cannot be fixed (or it would be cheaper to replace). Get a set of jacks or ramps. much safer for getting under there. jacks are for lifting not holding.

there is a small set screw on the jack somewhere and it is loose..., not really loose, but enuf, it can be 2 or four sided letting the pressure out that u pump out as fast as you are pumping it in, tighten to jack up and loosen to lower, (slowly), ALWAYS use jack stands of some sort...!!!!, we would like to here from you again, UNDERSTAND...
if there is no fluid ( on jack ) in sight it DOES NOT have a leak

I was of the impression that there is a retaining nut, usually with four sides, making it like a square nut, which you either tighten to hold the lift, or loosen to release the hydraulic when you are finished. Would someone who does this every day please help this person? Thank you! Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years pld.)

DEPENDING ON WHAT MAKE AND SIZE OF JACK THAT YOU HAVE, SOME JACKS ARE IRREPARABLE AND DISPOSABLE, BUT SOME OF THE LARGER JACKS HAVE A FITTING WHERE YOU CAN REFILL WITH HYDRAULIC FLUID
