there are two kinds of cable, one is a regular network cable the other is a data transfer cable. they look the same, but the cable combo in them is different. YOU MUST USE A DATA TRANSFER CABLE! if you dont, your computer will cease to exist. literaly. the cable will request too much data and the computer will fry. Ask someone at bestbuy or another similer store for more info.

The first guy is sort of correct, you need a crossover cable to directly connect 2 computers. Then you need to manually set your IP addresses on both computers, use something like 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. Make sure the workgroup names are the same and you should be able to see the other computer in my Network places.
The other alternative is to connect through a USB cable but you need a special purpose USB cable. Check out the link below.

Go to walmart get a linsys network hub and a couple of the same brand network cards.. A couple of net work cables which come with the network cards and you are ready to go.. Well you have to install the network cards in the computers first. Really not much more to it.
Forget what the guy above me here said.. He has no idea of what he is talking about.

Here's some ways:
1) LAN Cable - use crossover cable if you don't have hub.
2) LAPLINK Cable - the cheap and easy one is parallel laplink cable.
