It gets soooo confusing, especially in rock. I mean, there's emo, screamo, hardcore, post-hardcore, metal, death metal, nu metal, punk, pop-punk., goth...the list goes on. Do you pay attention to this, and if you could tell the difference between them, just how do you do it. God bless you all.

In my book there's just two kinds of music, good and bad!

Seriously, it's all so blended together these days. That's all you can say!

I do pay attencion to a few of them because punk and death metal are to totally different things you know. If you know what you and the other person are talking about its alot easier to understand. Like thrash is fast metal while power metal has high pitched singers and talks about dragons. You just have to know what your talking about. bUt sterotyping in genres is what I hate like evryone thinks death metal takes no talent and that its just screaming when actually its one of the most complicated music styles to play. So I agree with the other person it gets taken to far sometimes.

I don't really even know the difference between most of them, but telling the genre helps people know that I don't just like rock, I like hard rock.

I`m into rock music. and it gets very annoying. Because people place labels on you. Like if you listen to emo. You suddenly cut. ITS SO ANNOYING. I say eff it, And whatever sounds good, listen your little heart out.

Genre's are just an easy way to know what your listening to really, but its gettin taken to far sometimes!

Nope. I don't even pay attention to band names anymore. I usually lean more towards alternative though. As long as it sounds good, and has good lyrics, then I'm happy.

the sound in the alternative sub-genres you mentioned are subtly different. the bigger differences lay in the the "life styles" attached to them. the explosion of the alternative sub-genres came with nirvana bringing grunge/alternative into mainstream.
