The Civil War curtailed the women's rights conventions. Nevertheless, during the war Susan B. Anthony and other politically active reformers organized the Women's National Loyal League in New York to collect signatures on petitions urging the emancipation of slaves, which was achieved in 1865 with ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.

Please Go to the American National Biography site. These women stood up for the rights of women every where at a very chaotic time in American history. They were laughed on,spit on, riviled and often smacked down, they never gave up.

You should google that and see what you come up with. Women, both white and African American, played a huge role in the struggle to overcome slavery and the fight for civil rights.

Two great answers already. But I think I will be very sexist here and state that my guess is that women played the role they have always played in society. A role marked by stability, nurturing, and compassion, and probably mercy. In fact, I think if it were left to men on both sides, there would be a lot more violence...

Beat me to it........OH WELL......Good job "finaldx". She's absolutely right though, Ms's Tubman and Truth played a big part in helping Black people escape slavery. Women in general did a great deal in keeping the "underground railroad" successful. After days on the run, mostly through thick forest, in nasty weather. Those women were a welcome sight with food, dry clothes, if there was time, a place to sleep..........yes my friend, women were a big part in the success of the "underground railroad" please look it up, it makes for interesting reading......LATER....

Do a web search for Harriet Tubman and for Sojourner Truth. That should be a good starting point.....and they were but two of so very many. Such a powerful true story of exquisite heroism and valor.
