Geography. LAN is local area network, typically confined to a small geographical area like a building or group of buildings. A WAN is a wide area network, which has no distance limitations and can be world-wide. LANs are typically very fast, up to 10Gbps bandwidths now, while WANs are typically built from lower bandwidth links and they're more expensive links.

LAN is a computer network covering a local area, like a home, office, or group of buildings.

WAN is a computer network covering a broad geographical area. The most well-known example of a WAN is the Internet.

WANs are used to connect local area networks (LANs) together, so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations.
