Would it damage the laptop i have? Or would it just slow it down?
I have the most basic white Macbook with Mac Os X and i originally had 2 256mb of ram and i took out 1 256mb and swaped it for a 1gb ram. So would it damage the laptop?

No, it won't damage your Macbook. You did help your situation, but there is a speed advantage to installing identical sizes of RAM on either pair with the Intel chipsets, so if you get more, go ahead and get a second 1 GB stick

dont worry nothing will happen with your mac though if the speed of the rams are different then it could conflict with the other(if your using two rams)
