I know the media is somewhat to blame, but why can't individuals see beyond this and accept other ideas and values as well as people into our own conciousness? Why do we group entirely different people into the same categories and never give them a chance...why aren't we more open minded?

Because this generation grew up with a remote in their hand , and not a book. They did not have to think for themselves , they have computers and video games to make all the decisions for them . Their imagination has been stymied !! The ability to " think " without a machine to solve the problems for them is a lost art !!!!!

Because there are too many variables to take into account.
Most people have too many details in their own lives to worry about.Simply put,none of us are able to live someone elses life.
We can only try to understand what we see based on our own frame of reference.If what we see doesn't fit then we make assumptions and generalizations.That doesn't make us bad people,just ignorant.

Because some people want us to be so open minded that we allow them to do things that infringe on other peoples rights and that is not acceptable.
