His failure to address the urgent needs of common folk led to dissension and ultimately his violent overthrow by the people. The greatest accomplishment was probably the construction of the Palace of Versailles. It is a magnificient monument to welath and extravagence/ Marie Antoinette's response to the poor peoples plaint of we have no bread was "Let them eat cake," rubbed salt into a raw and open wound. For that arrogance, she paid with her head on the Guillotine!

He invented Stalinism long before Stalin was born. By centralising the government he build an inflexible stagnating society and economy that was unable to prosper and develop in subsequent generations. The much lauded palace of Versailles is hugely over rated, if you have ever actually been there. It is basically just a glorified hunting lodge with low ceilings and cramped rooms.

Marie Antoinette never said let them eat cake ( It was also attributed to Louis XIVs queen ). Marie Antoinette was a Saint.

Poor old Louis XVI did his best to make the most of the mess his two predecessors had made of the country and died on the scaffold because he would not let his troops fire on the people.

Louis XIV - Bad Man Bad King. Failed to establish an order that would allow his country long term wealth prosperity and happiness. had some nice furniture named after him.

Louis XVI - Good Man Bad King. Facilitator of Liberty in both US and Europe. Paid for with is own liberty and life.

Actually, all 3 Louis have some nice furniture named after them

Louis the XIV, also known as the Sun King, ruled France for 72 years. He was a renaissance king and made France into a major world power. During Louis' reign France became what all European countries aspired to be, educated, refined, and stable. He centralized power in way most monarchs had been unable to do, he coined the phrase "it's good to be king". He never once doubted his divine right to rule, and that may have been his biggest mistake, because it would be under Louis XVI that France would collapse and fall under the dictatorship of Napoleon. The divine right of kings gave way to 'power of the people' so to speak and as we all know it ended rather badly for Louis XVI.

One of the major accomplishments during the reign of Louis XIV was his ability to centralize the French government through absolutism. In fact, Louis eptomized this time period known as the "Age of Absolutism". He built the magnificent palace at Versaille...symbolizing his aboslute authority as well as his love for the arts. Versaille has become become a major tourist attraction for visitors today.

Probably his greatest failure is his repeal of the Edict of Nantes during the later part of reign (1685). The edict made Protestantism tolerant in France. However, with the repeal of Nantes and the introduction of the Edict of Fontainebleau, it made Protestantism illegal in France....forcing many French Protestants (sometimes called Hugenots) to flee to more friendly and tolerant areas of Europe.
