Kobe changed his jersey to start the second half of his career sort of like a fresh start. All the drama of Shaq, the Colorado case, etc will end with the number 8. He chose the number 24 to show his hard work ethic which is 24 hours a day. Saying that he works 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Kobe and Odom is 24/7. It also helps if changing your number will also increase your jersey sales.

He claims it is because he wants to go back to his high school number - 24.
However, I have two person theorys:
1) 24 is 1 greater than 23, thus saying he's just better than Jordan
2) His jersey sells have gone down because people usually don't buy the same jersey multiple times, so changing his number will force people to buy new ones in order to keep up with the times.

He said in interviews that after all his image damage and hate on his career he wanted a new start for him and just a whole new fresh beggingi and 24 is not a random new start or related to the often speculate one above michael jordan, it is his old number from early on in early high school days. because 33 which was also his number is retired in la.
