We are not using condoms. We're monogamous and have both had full STD panels done. We are a straight couple, but figured there would be more knowledge on the subject in this area.

The best lube is a very hard question to answer...there are so many to choose from.

I would personally recommend anything that would be water based only because you will not have to immediately wash it off after use.

If you do use a silicon based lube, be sure to put something underneath yourself. Otherwise it will stain your sheets...and it will not come out very easy with washing.

Never use any petroleum based products...they can be irritatative and some people tend to be allergic to them when it gets internal...so stay away from those.

I hope this helps...

There are various sorts of lubes.
Water based: there are many commercial brands available. They all suffer the disadvantage of drying out fairly quickly.
My favourite is J-Lube. This is a powder used by veterinarians for doing gynaecological exams on large animals.
It's very economical and cheap. There are other ready mixed ones like Aquaglide, Sensilube and K-Y, the latter by the way being the worst of all. They do not stain and are safe with condoms.
Oil based lubes: These include vaseline, Crisco, butter, olive oil etc. Vaseline and Nivea cream are among the best. The problem with these sort of lubes is that if you use significant amounts they tend to be digested in the lower intestinal tract and can cause quite painful wind. They do not dry up but some may irritate, Vaseline and Nivea are neutral. Not suitable for using with condoms? Some staining is inevitable.

Silicone oil. Silicone oil is a clear odourless liquid which always feels warm to the touch. It's good for anal sex. Rub some on the penis prior to insertion and squirt some into the awaiting rectum (use a disposable syringe; without the needle of course) It stays slippery for quite some time but will eventually dry up. Does not cause wind, but if used in quantity will dribble out the next day and may mark your pants or cause embarrassment, as silicon is not absorbed by the bowel. Warning: be careful if you try to break wind after using silicon oil. You might not be aware you are "leaking".
Will leave dark shadows on sheets if spilled.
In my humble opinion the best choice, but hey everybody's free.
PS all lubes work better when you have no fecal matter left in your lower intestinal tract.
PPS poppers are the best way to ensure painless insertion, particularly if the recipient is tight.

The only reason people suggest KY is because it's available at the grocery store, and they haven't tried anything good.
My suggestion would be Liquid Silk. It is water-based, which is not as important if you don't have to worry about condoms, but it also doesn't stain. It has very little taste, and does not contain glycerin (which can cause yeast infections in women who are prone to that). It doesn't seem to dry out very fast, as well.
It can be a pain to find, though...every time we run out, I have to do an internet search.

I personally prefer EROS personal lubricant for anal intercourse unlike other lubricant, Eros doesnt get sticky or dry. It's a silicone based lubricant. (so condom is needed)

For barebacking, I suggest Astro-glide because it is a water based lubricants that is a water soluble. The only problem with this one is you can't you it in the shower

KY Jelly is by far the best and probably the safest. It won't
irritate your rectum or vagina. Its the same lubricant a doc. uses to perform vaginal and rectal exams. Just be sure to use plenty of it if this is your first time.....
