I suspect you mean it in a solid geometric sense though. Only about 29 to 30% of the earth's surface is land and the remaining 70 to 71% is ocean.

It is difficult to be exact because neither the ocean nor the land is absolutely flat.

Proof is done by dividing the land into squares by longitude and latitude of equal areas. The smaller the areas the more accurate is the estimate. This is a rather tedious process that you wouldn't want to do.
