You can get pedals. Depends on how much you're looking to spend. I have a Boss Metalzone MT2 distortion pedal. I love it. If he already has one, there are plenty of other types of effects pedals available. If you want some cheaper, you can always go with getting accessories (strap, strings, picks). If price doesn't matter, a good guitar amp is a great gift. I prefer Peavey or Crate amps. If you still can't decide, gift certificates are an option.

Stick to a gift certificate from his favorite music store. You can NEVER buy the right thing for a guitar player. The thought doesn't even count for much if you get him a box of light picks and he prefers extra light.

Gift certificate to Guitar Center/. The main reason is most of the stuff he is going to want is, going to cost more than what you are looking to spend especially if he has been playing a while.
I always get GC gift cert.'s for b-day's, father's day and my brother-in-law always get them from me - it's kind of as secret gift code we have.

Get him some accesories required or wanted for his guitar, like a strap, a pick, a pedal, maybe some recording equipment if you have the money, a longer cable, a new amp if you have the money, maybe a display guitar. That's all I could think of.
