If the first thing someone notices about you is your makeup then you are wearing too much! You can go a little more bold at night especially if you will be in dim lighting.
Natural makeup that "complements" your face is the way to go. Don't go overboard on mascara and eyeliner. A light touch is better.

Nothing is funnier than to see a girl painted like a clown especially in the middle of the afternoon.
BUT SERIOUS, The actual point in wearing make up is to even out your skin tone and highlight your favorite features, in the day time. Evening make up is totally different. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

Make up should not look like you are made up. It should look as natural as possible. You can use different colors for eye shadow but it shouldn't look like a neon sign. I blend a lot. The stars tend to go strong because they are out there under bright lights and in costume. They don't really wear their make up like that in real life. Have you ever noticed women reporters? They tend to really look beautiful in their make up. They look go for a more natural look. they are always beautiful

When you start questioning if it's too much, most likely it is! natural with a little help. Not masking!
Don't ask a guy you know or he will likely not tell you truth to avoid hurting your feelings. Most guys I know like less make up than more.
Go with what's comfortable and don't try and over do it.
Cheers!

the whole point of make-up is to accentuate what you already have, not to look like a dog one minute and a princess the next. the tricky part of wearing make-up and knowing how much is too much, is to remember this: i always try to put on my makeup and look like I'm not wearing any, this way it looks like natural beauty, not fake and painted on - the only place you can tell that i wear make-up is my eyes and lips - eyeliner, shadow, and lip gloss is all you can tell that i wear. when really, i wear foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, lip liner, lipstick or gloss

1).If your face color is darker than your body color, that's too much.
2.) If it looks like you put Spackle on your face (or the pancake look) that's too much.
3.) If you can't see your eyes through the eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara, that's too much.
4.) If you can see your lips coming before you, that's too much.
5.) If your cheeks are red, that's too much.

It depends on what shades you are using. If you have layers of makeup, but they are all natural and earthy shades, it does not look as too much. But if you are wearing really bright and flashy colors, those distract the eyes and look as too much.
